A child can ask questions that a wise man cannot answer..

Excerpts from this year in First Grade:

My car was stolen in December, after telling my class why I was late, a student raised their hand to ask:
"Was the bad guy wearing black and white stripes?"

In November I had decided I was going to save money and try coloring my hair at home. Needless to say, it was a horrible idea! I looked like a skunk. However, I still had to work while I waited to see a hair specialist. As I welcomed my reading group in the morning a student raised her hand, "yes?" I asked. She quizzically looked at me and said, "did you do something different to you hair?" I responded confidently with, "Why yes, do you like it?" She thought for a moment and answered, "hmm.. yeah, I especially like how it is black with white spots."

While teaching my science lesson on Earth I explained to the class that the Earth is made of rock. We discussed the different layers and outer space exploration. After the lesson a scholar raises her hand and asks, "Well, if the Earth is made of rock then do we bust through it to get to outer space?" Her deep thinking blew my mind! Of course, as an adult, we know this is not the case. However, think of a child learning that we live IN a planet, like a bubble. It was the most fascinating concept. In response to her question and a diagram of the Earth I answered, "We live on the outside of the rock." She crinkles her eyebrows and says, "Oh no! How do we not fall off if it rotates?!" Thus divulging into the concept of gravity.. :)

While at recess a student runs up to me, gives me a hug around my belly and says while patting, "oh, your tummy feels just like my moms.".... her mother just had a baby a month before...

Cleaning up for car-pool a student asks, "Miss Layton, if you are here all day.. when do you go to work?" I smiled and said, "this is my work." Her response with a confused expression, "Eww.. you go to school for work!"
